2013 Oscar Predictions: Opening the Film Editing and Production Design Doors

The Academy is already submitting nominations for the 2013 Oscars, both by mail and, for the first time, online. As such, there were still a few categories I have yet to begin predicting, and it’s time to start opening those doors.

While I still have to place predictions for Best Documentary, Foreign Language Film and the two music categories, Original Song and Score, I am beginning today with Best Film Editing and Best Production Design (previously known as Best Art Direction).

I will take a look at the four remaining categories over the next couple of days. For now here are today’s updates.

Best Film Editing

Only nine times has the eventual Best Picture winner not been nominated for Best Film Editing, it’s the reason my top five is made up of five films from my Best Picture contenders. As for the ranking, it’s gut instinct more than anything at this point with Zero Dark Thirty leading the way primarily due to its powerful finale. For that matter, however, Argo is just as intense when it comes to its conclusion and it was really hard to leave Flight out of the top five given its impressive opening sequence.

  1. Zero Dark Thirty
  2. Argo
  3. Lincoln
  4. Life of Pi
  5. Les Miserables

Best Production Design

The Academy has shown it isn’t always about practical in this category as of late with wins for Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and Hugo, which makes me think Life of Pi has a really good chance of sneaking in and taking this one, especially depending on what the overall reaction to Anna Karenina ends up being.

I also wonder what kind of push Columbia is going to make when it comes to Zero Dark Thirty considering the pain-staking efforts Jeremy Hindle and his team went through to recreate Osama bin Laden’s compound.

  1. Life of Pi
  2. Anna Karenina
  3. Lincoln
  4. Les Miserables
  5. Argo
