Paramount has revealed the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 Star Trek reboot.

It has already been revealed the first trailer for the film will play in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14, though fans that attend screenings of The Hobbit in full-sized 70mm IMAX 3D will be treated to the first 9 minutes of the film.
Star Trek 2 hits theaters on May 17, 2013 and was written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Along with Pine and Cumberbatch the film also features returning stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban as well as newcomers Alice Eve, Peter Weller and Noel Clarke.
