Wally Pfister Taps Johnny Depp to Star in His Directorial Debut, ‘Transcendence’

Wally Pfister, long-time cinematographer for Christopher Nolan on films such as The Dark Knight, Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, is preparing to step behind the camera as director for the first time. The film, we now learn, is titled Transcendence and outside of Pfister previously revealing it’s a “present-day science fiction film” with a “fairly big concept” nothing else is known… Well, until now…

New information from Deadline.com reveals Johnny Depp is negotiating to star in the film for Pfister, who refers to Depp saying he’s “a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative.”

The screenplay was written by Jack Paglen, another unknown talent so don’t go looking for any additional information there either. You can do your best to come up with information based on the title, but until a nugget such as when the word “dreams” was introduced to the idea behind Inception, you’re going to be crawling around in the dark.

The project is expected to begin shooting in 2013 for what I assume will be a 2014 release. The budget is expected to be quite big, though Pfister did say, “Not as big as Batman, but not independent.” Warner Bros. will distribute. [Deadline]
