New ‘Hobbit’ TV Spot, Five Empire Covers and the New Dolby Atmos Sound System Used for the Film

A series of items related to the upcoming release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey have arrived including the first TV spot, five individual Empire magazine covers dedicated to the film and news of a new Dolby sound mix used for the film.

First we’ll look at the news that Dolby Laboratories Inc. and Peter Jackson‘s Park Road Post Production have announced The Hobbit will be mixed and released in Dolby Atmos, a new sound system said to be immersive and featuring two extra arrays of overhead speakers allowing for the ability to direct sounds to individual speakers inside movie theaters.

To the right is an in-theater commercial for the new system and here is how it is described:

The most significant development in audio since the arrival of surround sound is here. Dolby® Atmos delivers audiences a more natural and realistic soundfield, transporting them into the story with a lifelike sensory experience. Developed with input from professionals throughout the movie industry, Dolby® Atmos represents a dynamic shift in audio, reinventing the traditional surround sound methodology and offering a complete platform for sound now and well into the future.

You can get more detailed information here and check out a feature on the new system below.
