The only thing that makes me even slightly interested in the upcoming remake of Stephen King’s Carrie is the fact it’s directed by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry). Because, really, what is there to do with this film that wasn’t already done in Brian DePalma’s 1976 original? Even the casting of Chloe Moretz (Let Me In) seems too on-the-nose to be worth getting too excited for.
As for the film, the story is no different than your remember:
The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Julianne Moore) and her daughter Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc.
Okay, I take it back, I’m a little interested in seeing Portia Doubleday, whom I haven’t seen since 2009’s Youth in Revolt. However, will she be relegated to playing a stereotypical mean girl? We’ll see, hope is Peirce has something up her sleeve.
