Can Tom Cruise’s ‘Jack Reacher’ Survive Its December Competition?

Yahoo debuted the following new international poster for Tom Cruise‘s upcoming actioner Jack Reacher in which he plays the title character, a former military policeman-turned-drifter.

The film is based on Lee Childs’ novel “One Shot” in which Reacher investigates a case in which a lone sniper murders five victims before being captured. Reacher discovers it’s more than a simple open-and-shut case.

Christopher McQuarrie (screenwriter of The Usual Suspects) is directing with Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, Robert Duvall, Werner Herzog and A Good Day to Die Hard newcomer Jai Courtney also playing a role.

The film is set to hit theaters on December 21, right smack dab in-between the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Django Unchained and Les Miserables while also competing with Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, The Impossible and Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up spin-off This is 40 in the same week.

If you ask me, that’s too many films at once and more than one is going to suffer an embarrassing defeat that will have most of the people in the media placing blame all over the place, most disregarding the number of high profile releases being released at the same time and likely pointing fingers at the stars and directors of the films. Then again, maybe they won’t. We’ll see.

Here’s that poster…
