$30.3 million, that’s the number the execs at Sony Pictures Animation are eyeing right now. It’s the opening weekend number Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs hit in 2009 and after $11 million at the box-office Hotel Transylvania stands a good chance at topping it.
Sony is also enjoying the #2 slot at the Friday box-office and will enjoy the #1 and #2 slot for the weekend as no other films will be topping Hotel or Rian Johnson‘s Looper, the latter of which opened to $6.9 million on Friday and will hope to cross $20 million for the weekend, a solid start I would say as heady sci-fi films seem like they’re one of the hardest sells to general audiences.
Universal’s Pitch Perfect, which I’ve seen a lot of people praising, is doing quite well in limited release. Opening in only 335 theaters, the film brought in an estimated $1.7 million on Friday for a $5,224 per theater average.
Things are less cheery for Fox and Walden whose Won’t Back Down is off to a horrible start, bringing in only $921,000 from 2,515 theaters for a Friday per theater average of only $366. At least you will be able to kick up your feet and enjoy the show as you’ll likely be the only one in the theater if you catch it this Saturday or Sunday.
I have included the Friday top ten below and will be back tomorrow with a complete weekend wrap-up.
