It’s interesting to watch this TV spot for Cloud Atlas and seeing the critical quotes culled to blather effusively related to the film. It’s interesting because I don’t necessarily disagree with the quotes, at least not in context. In some ways it is a “remarkable movie experience”, but not for the duration and more in brief snippets. In terms of the way it weaves six stories together spanning something like 250 years does make it a cinematic accomplishment, but “massive”? Eh, not so sure about that.
“Fascinating, breathtaking and epic.” Again, in pieces, with the first two, but admittedly it is quite epic. “One of the must-see movies of the year.” I enjoyed Cloud Atlas and think it is worth seeing in the theater, but “must-see” and “of the year” I think establish how disappointing this year has been from a blockbuster perspective on a lot of levels.
Here’s the teaser for my Cloud Atlas review out of Toronto:
Cloud Atlas is ambitious beyond measure and yet relatively narrow in scope when compared to the size of its interweaving of six separate narratives. Yet, it remains a film that must be seen on the big screen to appreciate all it has to offer.
