I am back home in Seattle after a lengthy trip to the Toronto Film Festival and I come home to notice Resident Evil: Retribution almost topped last weekend’s #1 film on its opening day with $8.4 million and should be able to end the weekend around $22-23 million. The result is looking to be slightly less than 2010’s installment and more in line with 2007’s Resident Evil: Extinction, but considering the success this franchise has had overseas I’m sure Screen Gems is quite happy and hoping Paul Anderson and Milla Jovovich would be down to make another one.
In second was Pixar’s 3D re-release of Finding Nemo, which Laremy pegged to hit #1 with $29.4 million, but that isn’t going to happen. After $5 million on Friday it’s likely going to end around $16 million or so, perhaps a little higher.
Other new releases includes Last Ounce of Courage, a film I just added to the database. The film is targeting the “freedom loving and faith based” audiences and brought in $690,000 from 1,407 theaters on Friday and along with 2016: Obama’s America, it could mean two films in the top ten for Rocky Mountain Pictures.
In limited release, The Master brought in $242,000 from five theaters and 10 Years opened to a soft $7,200 from only three theaters. The Master will expand next weekend as will 10 Years. And Raiders of the Lost Ark continued its limited IMAX run with $106,000.
