‘Avengers’ Movie Updates, ‘Bourne Legacy’ Sequel, Cameron’s Nastier ‘Jurassic Park’ and More

NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke has confirmed Universal Pictures is beginning work on a sequel to The Bourne Legacy and wants to do Ted 2 “as soon as we can.” As for the Bourne sequel, there has been talk of somehow bringing together Jeremy Renner‘s Aaron Cross and Matt Damon‘s Jason Bourne, but for now those remain simply rumors. MGM and Columbia Pictures announced principal photography on RoboCop will begin on Saturday, September 15 in Toronto under the direction of Jose Padilha with stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

With the announcement came the following synopsis:

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

RoboCop is targeting an August 9, 2013 release.

Once titled 300: The Battle of Artemisia, Warner Bros. has changed the title to the sequel to Zack Snyder’s 300, which will now go by 300: Rise of an Empire. The film is based on a script by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad and will be directed by Noam Murro. The cast currently includes Sullivan Stapleton, Rodrigo Santoro, Eva Green and Jamie Blackley. The film will hit theaters on August 2, 2013.

James Cameron has revealed he came close to directing the adaptation of Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park before Steven Spielberg beat him to it. As for his approach, he said Spielberg was the right man for the job. “Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds,” he said. “We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I’d have gone further, nastier, much nastier.” [HuffPo]

There was a rumor saying Viggo Mortensen would be playing Doctor Strange in Thor: The Dark World, which has been shot down, while Bleeding Cool is reporting on the possibility of a major character being killed off.

In other Avengers-related news, Iron Man 3 is moving its production to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in October while Edgar Wright‘s test reel for Ant-Man that was shown at Comic Con is being cleaned up and will be released online shortly. [Collider]

There have been a few release date moves with Summit moving Sinister a week back to October 12 and Fox Searchlight bumping The Sessions up a week to October 19, a slot recently vacated by Killing Them Softly where it will face off against Alex Cross and Paranormal Activity 4.

Finally, Electronic Arts has announced multiplayer maps will be released for “Medal of Honor: Warfighter” which will be based on locations in Kathryn Bigelow‘s hunt for Osama bin Laden feature Zero Dark Thirty. Locations include the Darra Gun Market and Chitral Compound, the latter of which is believed to be where Bin Laden had a hideout. [ZoKnowsGaming via The Playlist]
