Friday Box-Office: ‘Possession’ at #1 with ‘Lawless’ a Distant Second

I am taking a small vacation over the course of this three-day weekend and so your Friday box-office update is going to be a short one though I will dedicate a little more time to the Sunday morning one.

That said, Deadline has the early estimates and it doesn’t look like this is the way the studios wanted to end the summer with The Possession topping Friday with a decent $6.1 million on its way to a $14-15 million weekend. That’s all fine and dandy for a PG-13 horror movie Lionsgate didn’t even screen for critics all over the country and only cost $14 million to make, but yikes, the rest of the field isn’t too pretty.

Lawless managed only an estimated $2.8 million and it’s in second and could potentially slide to #3 behind The Expendables 2 and your new titles end there with the rest of the lot is made up of limited releases.

One film that wasn’t in limited release and seeing how I took the time to add it to the database (thinking it might crack the top ten), I have to at least mention The Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure. Here is a film on its way to one of the worst openings of all-time, opening on Wednesday and Thursday to the tune of $225,588 from 2,160 theaters. On Wednesday the film averaged $42 per location and on Thursday a whopping $57. Friday totals aren’t in yet, but Deadline reports it’s looking at something around $1 million for its first six days in release.

I have added the Friday estimates below and will be back Sunday with a complete wrap-up.

  1. The Possession – $6.1 million
  2. Lawless – $2.8 million
  3. The Expendables 2 – $2.2 million
  4. The Bourne Legacy – $1.8 million
  5. 2016 Obama’s America – $1.4 million
  6. ParaNorman – $1.4 million
  7. The Odd Life Of Timothy Green – $1.4 million
  8. The Campaign – $1.4 million
  9. The Dark Knight Rises – $1.3 million
  10. Hope Springs – $1.1 million
