DECEMBER 19 [WEDNESDAY]
The kids are getting out of school and after Disney and Pixar brought Finding Nemo to theaters in 3D in September they are bringing Monsters, Inc. in 3D in December as they prepare audiences for the prequel, Monsters University, in June 2013. You’ve got to hand it to Disney, they know how to promote their wares.
Now one film that won’t appeal to any children, whatsoever, anywhere in the world is Michael Haneke‘s Amour, a film I saw in Cannes and a film that is masterful in its telling, but an absolute slice of misery to watch. Here’s a snippet from my review:
Sunday morning, May 20, 2012, at 8:30 AM CET, I sat down and watched a woman die over the course of two hours. It wasn’t pleasant.
Elegantly told with the utmost respect for its characters, Michael Haneke’s Amour (Love) is as well-crafted as they come, but the unbearable nature of watching it is overwhelming. The horrors of old age are fully realized as are the resulting effects not only on the person suffering the agony of withering away, but those that have to watch them do it.
You can read the full review here, but I think you get my drift. For you Oscar watchers, though, this is definitely one to watch as you may find a rooting interest come February next year.
We then move to the battlefront as Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal collaborate once again for Zero Dark Thirty, a film that focuses on the black ops mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, which culminated in his death in May 2011 during a high-stakes raid on his compound in Pakistan. Bigelow and Boal worked on developing the project since 2008.
The cast includes Jason Clarke, Chris Pratt, Joel Edgerton, Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Edgar Ramirez, Kyle Chandler, Nash Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Harold Perrineau Jr., Fares Fares and Mark Duplass and so far all that has been released is the following teaser trailer and a few images, which you can check out here.
