New Poster for ‘The Master’ Looks Political

Is it just me or does this new poster for The Master look like an advertisement for Barack Obama’s re-election campaign? Am I missing the symbolism? Maybe I am just a little slow this Monday morning, but I’m not entirely getting the meaning? Is it a message of “hope” compared to the half-empty bottle of alcohol seen on the first poster? Despair leads to Hope leads to… Am I looking for meaning where there is none?

A lot of conversation surrounding Paul Thomas Anderson‘s latest film was swirling over the weekend after it screened for the first time in Santa Monica. As would be expected, reactions were generous for the film in which Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls.

Along with Hoffman the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Lena Endre, Jesse Plemons, David Warshofsky, Rami Malek and Joshua Close and is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival followed by a North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival after which it will open on September 14 on a limited capacity before expanding nationwide the following weekend.
