Weekend Box-Office: ‘Dark Knight Rises’ #1 Again as ‘Total Recall’ has a Hard Time Living Up to Arnold’s Version

No big surprises this week yet again as The Dark Knight Rises cruises to an easy #1 finish for the third weekend in a row, topping Sony’s Total RecalL remake, which really didn’t do too well. Let’s take a look at how things turned out.

Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 8 Weeks In A Row

The Dark Knight Rises

With a dip of just 41.4% it would seem The Dark Knight Rises is settling in after all the craziness that surrounded the weekend of its release. With over $354 million domestically and $733 million worldwide, you’re looking at the third highest grossing film of 2012 and it shouldn’t be long before it moves into that number two spot over The Hunger Games.
Weekend: $36.4 million (-41.4% drop)

Cummulative Total: $354.6 million

RottenTomatoes Score: 87%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $28.1 million was $8.3m off for a percentage error of 22.8%.
Yikes, the 2012 remake of Total Recall was only able to beat Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1990 version’s opening weekend by a mere $466,300 and there’s no telling if this estimate is going to dip any further when the actuals come in. As for now, looking over the reader predictions from Thursday, “jess E.” is currently enjoying having the closest prediction with a spot on $26 million guess. Nice work.

If there’s any kind of bright spot for this film it is likely to do quite well overseas and instead of the $200 million budget that was being reported all summer, a questionable $125 budget is currently what is being reported, but that sounds a bit sketchy if you ask me.

Weekend: $26 million / RottenTomatoes: 31%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $25.2 million, which is $0.8m off for a 3.08% error.
What happened to the Wimpy Kid franchise? After bringing in $22.1 million in 2010 and $23.7 million in 2011 it dips to a mere $14.7 million in 2012? On top of that it was in more theaters (3,391) than it has ever been in before.

Looking over the reader predictions Chris Etrata came closest with a $17.3 million prediction, but many were with Laremy and went above $20 million and some even higher. The highest being $27.4m.

Weekend: $14.7 million / RottenTomatoes: 50%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $22 million, which is $7.3m off for a 49.66% error.
Over $715 million worldwide and still counting. This franchise is a beast internationally.
Weekend: $8.4 million (-36.8% drop) / Cume: $131.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 38%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $7.3 million, which is $1.1m off for a 13.1% error.
This film is so much more entertaining than most people gave it credit for. Oh well, at least I had my fun.
Weekend: $6.3 million (-50.4% drop) / Cume: $25.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 16%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $5.7 million, which is $0.6m off for a 9.52% error.
6. Ted
Did you hear they are working on a Ted 2? Excited?
Weekend: $5.4 million (-26% drop) / Cume: $203.4 million / RottenTomatoes: 69%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $4.5 million, which is $0.9m off for a 16.67% error.
I’m a Step Up guy… what can I say?
Weekend: $5.3 million (-54.7% drop) / Cume: $23.0 million / RottenTomatoes: 36%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $5 million, which is $0.3m off for a 5.66% error.
Does it really matter if Sony gets Marc Webb back to direct the sequel? Did you recognize much of a directorial stamp on this feature that indicated it might lose something should they go with someone else?
Weekend: $4.3 million (-35.8% drop) / Cume: $250.6 million / RottenTomatoes: 73%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $3.1 million, which is $1.2m off for a 27.91% error.
Here’s another one where the international dollars haven’t yet started rolling in. As of right now it is only $500,000 behind WALL-E to become the eight highest grossing Pixar film of all-time domestically, but with only $118 million tallied internationally so far it has got a lot of room to climb worldwide.
Weekend: $2.8 million (-34.9% drop) / Cume: $223.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 77%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $2.4 million, which is $0.4m off for a 14.29% error.
Just an amazing accomplishment. I hope most of you were able to see this film and if not, head on out and give it a chance.
Weekend: $1.3 million (-50% drop) / Cume: $110.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 79%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $1.1 million, which is $0.2m off for a 15.38% error.

Elsewhere, Sony Classics’ Celeste and Jesse Forever fared well in limited release bringing in $112,000 from four theaters, but Magnolia’s 360 came in on the light side bringing in $12,600 from only two. However, the worst of the weekend lot was Broken Lizard’s new film The Babymakers, which was playing 11 theaters and managed a whopping $5,800 for a $527 per theater average. Ouch!

As I said, next weekend sees the release of The Bourne Legacy as well as the Will Farrell and Zach Galifianakis R-rated political comedy The Campaign. Anyone care to place any early predictions?
