There was no doubt The Dark Knight Rises was going to take its third weekend in a row. The only film that stood a chance was Sony’s Total Recall, which has been met with lackluster reviews (most far more kind than mine) and, as expected, things are playing out accordingly.
Dark Knight took in an estimated $10.4 million on Friday and should end the weekend adding an additional $34 million to its total, which was $318 million heading into the weekend, $566.3 million worldwide.
Total Recall will claim second after $9.2 million on Friday and a weekend likely around $27-28 million. The PG-13 rated remake is reportedly budgeted at $125 million, which seems incredibly low to me, and while it might not break the bank stateside, I expect it will have decent legs overseas and end its run with solid results.
In third is the weekend’s other new wide release, the family targeted Diary of a Wimpy Kind: Dog Days, which brought in $5.9 million and should settle in somewhere in the $17-18 million mark by end of the day Sunday. The film is the third in the franchise and this is actually a rather big drop considering the last installment, Rodrick Rules, outperformed the 2010 original bringing in $23.7 million on opening weekend. While in over 200 more theaters than the 2011 sequel, Dog Days is looking to come up around $6 million short of that number. Looks like the Wimp is limping.
