Weekend Box-Office: ‘Snow White’ Opens Strong, ‘Avengers’ #3 All-Time and ‘Prometheus’ Big Overseas

On Snow White and the Huntsman going in and the film was getting some bad reviews. Nevertheless, it performed well and some of the readers were able to see through the fog and come away with some solid predictions. Let’s have a look…

Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row

Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White peformed quite well amidst poor reviews and a studio that was lowering expectations heading into the weekend as this wasn’t exactly the easiest movie to track as I’m sure it was hard to discern interest across gender lines. For Universal this is a result they are most likely very happy to see following the disappointment that was Battleship and The Five-Year Engagement. I do wonder, however, just how well can this film hold on with a “B” CinemaScore and Prometheus hitting theaters next weekend, surely stealing most of the male audience.

When it comes to predictions, Laremy was pretty far off, but this tends to happen to him when he doesn’t like a movie. That, however, is what I love about his predictions. It’s one thing to let the math do the talking and quite another to maintain a little bit of integrity and sticking up for quality.

Some readers, however, weren’t as pessimistic. When it comes to reader predictions several were rather close, but it’s tough to beat Ferdi whose $56.2 million prediction was spot on. Very nice work edging out Brian whose kicking himself for not knocking a couple grand off his $56.5 million prediction.

Weekend: $56.2 million

RottenTomatoes Score: 46%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $38.9 million was $17.3m off for a percentage error of 30.78%.
Considering it didn’t exactly enjoy a stellar opening, Men in Black III only dropped 46% in its second weekend and brought in $29.3 million as it has now made over $330 million worldwide. A reported budget of $225 million means it still has some work to do to hit profitability at the box-office, but at this point home video will surely put it in the black.
Weekend: $29.3 million (-46.2% drop) / Cume: $112.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 69%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $23.2 million, which is $6.1m off for a 20.82% error.
You guys were all over me recently for not updating the Box-Office Oracle graphic, well, did you notice I had to update it once again as The Avengers is now the third highest grossing domestic release of all-time, passing The Dark Knight this weekend? It has now made $552.7 million domestically and it is also #3 on the worldwide chart, passing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 as it has now made $1.35 billion across the globe. It needs to make $800 million more to catch Titanic worldwide, $120 million domestically.
Weekend: $20.2 million (-44.8% drop) / Cume: $552.7 million / RottenTomatoes: 93%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $24.6 million, which is $4.4m off for a 21.78% error.
I wish I could be in on the exec meetings when they discuss Battleship. I’m sure there is some magical Hollywood accounting that spins this $209 million turkey into a positive.
Weekend: $4.8 million (-56.4% drop) / Cume: $55.1 million / RottenTomatoes: 34%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $4.4 million, which is $0.4m off for a 8.33% error.
With just over $100 million worldwide it would seem the Sacha Baron Cohen schtick has worn off. However, I predict at some point in the future Cohen will be nominated for an acting Oscar. Anyone care to disagree?
Weekend: $4.7 million (-48.9% drop) / Cume: $50.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 58%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $5.7 million, which is $1m off for a 21.28% error.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has made over $100 million worldwide and has solid reviews and yet I haven’t heard or read anyone talking about it outside of its box-office success. It seems strange there isn’t a push for any kind of Oscar love. I haven’t seen it so I don’t know if there is anything to talk about, but it seems there is a general consensus that it’s good.
Weekend: $4.6 million (-27% drop) / Cume: $25.4 million / RottenTomatoes: 76%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $6.2 million, which is $1.6m off for a 34.78% error.
It would seem you can now place this alongside New Year’s Eve as one of two films proving you need Adam Sandler in your ensemble comedy in order for it to make money.
Weekend: $4.4 million (-38% drop) / Cume: $30.7 million / RottenTomatoes: 21%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $4.5 million, which is $0.1m off for a 2.27% error.
$177 million worldwide and it seems we have one more weekend of this film until we hear from it now more.
Weekend: $3.8 million (-49% drop) / Cume: $70.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 40%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $4.3 million, which is $0.5m off for a 13.16% error.
Talk about a fall out (bad joke). This one dipped 62% in its second weekend and you can bet we’ll be hearing of a DVD/Blu-ray release date very soon.
Weekend: $3 million (-62% drop) / Cume: $14.4 million / RottenTomatoes: 22%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.5 million, which is $0.5m off for a 16.67% error.
I had not heard of this film until the last week or so, which is weird for a film that stars Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Oscar Isaac, Bruce Greenwood, Peter O’Toole, Bruce McGill, Nestor Carbonell, Ruben Blades and Catalina Sandino Moreno. Then you look at the 21% RottenTomatoes rating and think, “Ah, maybe it’s not that weird.”
Weekend: $1.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 21%

Laremy’s rank: Not Ranked

In other news, while not in the top ten, Moonrise Kingdom expanded from 4 theaters to 16 and brought in $849,000 this weekend for a $53,000 per theater average and a new total after two weeks of very limited release to $1.7 million.

Then we come to the truly awful Piranha 3DD which played On Demand this weekend as well as opening in 86 theaters where it brought in a paltry $179,000. I just wonder if they subtract refund requests from the total before estimating.

Finally, we get to next week’s big release of Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus, which opened overseas this weekend and enjoyed the highest opening day for a Ridley Scott film in the UK and bringing in a total of $35 million from 15 international markets including $11 million in Russia, $9.9 million from the UK (73% of that gross was from 3-D) and $7 million in France (source). The film is set to hit 3,300 theaters next weekend in the States where it will play in 3-D and IMAX theaters… Anyone want to make an early prediction? Just know, 2,200 of those theaters will be 3-D.
