Not much has been said about Ron Howard‘s Rush to this point. Howard has been tweeting a few images from the set (right now he’s tweeting images from the 70th Monaco Grand Prix), but otherwise the film remains a bit of an undiscovered up-and-comer, particularly with most news surrounding Howard having to do with The Dark Tower and/or “Arrested Development”. It also doesn’t help the film is still without a release date and runs the risk of being confused with Sony’s bike messenger thriller Premium Rush starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
However, today we get our first look at the film in this behind-the-scenes peek courtesy of the BBC in which you’d be hard pressed not to want to make instant comparisons to Asif Kapadia‘s much-talked-about 2011 documentary Senna. The way the video pieces together looks at the production and Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as Formula-1 race star James Hunt and Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds) as his long-time rival Niki Lauda makes it look incredibly fascinating.
The film is set in the 1970s and follows the on the track and off lives of Hunt and Lauda and their racing teams of McLaren and Ferrari. The script was written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon) and if the film captures the intensity and emotion of the rivalry to the degree this 3:48 minute featurette manages then we could be in for something special. Question is, when will we see it?
Along with Hemsworth and Bruhl the film co-stars Olivia Wilde, Natalie Dormer and Christian McKay and Oscar-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire) filmed the action.
