When it comes to my Oscar predictions so far the only category I have David Fincher‘s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo nominated at this point is a Best Cinematography nom for Jeff Cronenweth. Like everyone else I’m waiting to see if the subject matter is too intense, too stylized, too Fincher for the Academy and perhaps we have received our first clue.
Talking with Entertainment Weekly Fincher says, “There’s too much anal rape in this movie” to get nominated, he says, half-jokingly. “I think we’re very safe.”
Fincher’s quote reminds me of when earlier this year George Clooney said, “I f–ked too many chicks and did too many drugs” to run for President. Clooney has since shared a little more all but guaranteeing we won’t see him among the candidates ever The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is being sold as “The Feel Bad Movie of Christmas” and may find itself in similar company.
As far as the Oscar process goes, Fincher recounts an incident from last year when The Social Network was competing against The King’s Speech in all the major categories including Best Picture
“It’s an incredible drain — a cosmic drain. Because you have to be on your best behavior. Every little weird facial tic that you may already have is now going to come under weird scrutiny on f–ing YouTube.” As an example, he tells a story about last year’s Directors Guild of America Awards ceremony. “It’s so funny: It may have been in the middle of [King’s Speech director] Tom Hooper’s acceptance speech, somebody who shall remain nameless who was seated at the table with me got up and left. I stayed to the end and wished Tom the best, did the whole thing, got a drink, left late. Then one of these bloggers was like, ‘Fincher bolted right in the middle.’ I was like, ‘Wait a minute, I actually stayed and I got credit for bolting.’ You just can’t win.”
While we wait for the December 21 release of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and we can finally judge the final product, why don’t you check out this new one-minute TV spot for the film courtesy of The Movie Box.
