Back in June it was Moviehole reported Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, The Hitcher: I’ve Been Waiting and Carnosaur 2 helmer Louis Morneau would direct for a fall shoot.
Now, it has become a reality as Universal announced the start of production on what they describe as an “all-new supernatural Untitled Werewolf Thriller” with Morneau directing.
Filming will take place in and around Bucharest, Romania and the film won’t be heading to theaters as the studio confirms it will be part of their DVD Originals line alongside such titles as The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior and the upcoming January release of [amazon asin=”B005TK0WG8″ text=”The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption”] starring Ron Perlman and Billy Zane. This Untitled Werewolf Thriller will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and On Demand in time for Halloween 2012.
Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta), Steven Bauer (Scarface), Ed Quinn (“True Blood”), Nia Peeples (“Pretty Little Liars”), Guy Wilson (Little Black Book), Adam Croasdell (“Supernatural”) and Rachel DiPillo (“Law & Order”) will star with a script originally written by Michael Tabb and re-written by Morneau and Catherine Cyran. Cyran wrote Slumber Party Massacre III and directed three sequels to the Julia Stiles, 2004 rom-com, The Prince & Me.
As for the synopsis, the story goes like this:
A monstrous creature terrorizes a 19th Century European village by moonlight and a young man struggles to protect his loved ones from an unspeakable scourge in Untitled Werewolf Thriller, Universal Studios’ all-new addition to its time-honored legacy of supernatural thrillers. During his studies with the local doctor (Stephen Rea), Daniel (Guy Wilson) witnesses the horrific consequences of werewolf attacks. Watching as the beast’s fearsome reputation draws bounty hunters, thrill seekers and charlatans to the tiny town, Daniel dreams of destroying the ruthless predator. So when a mysterious stranger (Ed Quinn) and his team of skilled werewolf hunters (Stephen Bauer, Adam Croasdell) arrive to pursue the monster, he offers to join them, despite his mother’s (Nia Peeples) protests. But it soon becomes clear that this creature is stronger, smarter and more dangerous than anything they have faced before. As casualties mount and villagers see their neighbors transformed into ravening monsters, the townsfolk take up arms against each other to find the true identity of the werewolf. Amid the hysteria, Daniel begins to suspect he’s closer to his target than he ever dreamed.
I can only assume Rea will be playing the man who turns into a werewolf and it’s only fitting considering he has already played the the other side of the mythical coin as the vampire Santiago in Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire in 1994 and he also has something to do with the upcoming Underworld Awakening, though I’m not sure he is anything more than a human in that one playing the role of Dr. Jacob Lane.
