First Looks at Tim Burton’s New Stop Motion Feature, ‘Frankenweenie’

At the end of last week Disney sent over a few first look images at Tim Burton‘s latest stop-motion animated feature Frankenweenie in which the director is returning to familiar territory as he’s turning his 1984 short film (part one to the left) into a feature all its own.

Frankenweenie is a 3D, stop-motion, black-and-white animated film in which Young Victor (voiced by Charlie Tahan) works away in his attic lab, attempting to bring his beloved dog Sparky, a playful and curious bull terrier, back to life with lessons he learned about electricity from his science teacher Mr. Rzykruski (voiced by Martin Landau).

Along with Landau and Tahan, the voice cast includes Winona Ryder as Elsa van Helsing, Catherine O’Hara as Victor’s mother Susan, Martin Short, Tom Kenny and Conchata Ferrell.

Disney is set to release the film just under a year from now on October 5, 2012. I’ve included two more images directly below along with the full synopsis.

In Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences. A stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie will be filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience. From creative genius Tim Burton (Alice in Wonderland, The Nightmare Before Christmas) comes Frankenweenie, a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life–with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.
