Fincher’s ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Roots Exposed Amidst Rumors of Head-Butting Over Running Time

The unofficial viral website promoting David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has just revealed a snazzy new video giving you a silent look at the car accident that starts all of the film’s mayhem.

The story actually begins 40 years before present day events, a day in which a Vanger family gathering results in the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, a scion of the wealthy Swedish family. Believed to have been murdered, Harriet’s uncle isn’t so convinced, and 40 years later continues to seek the truth. On the day of Harriet’s disappearance a car accident on the bridge connecting the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan to the mainland is thought to have been used as a distraction for the murder or whatever devious thing happened to Harriet. The video below gives a drive by look at the clean-up.

Meanwhile, The Playlist is reporting Fincher currently has a three hour cut of the film, something Sony is hoping he snips down to two-hours-and-twenty-minutes, conjuring memories of Fincher’s head-butting with Paramount over The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Additionally, the Mouth Taped Shut viral site is an unsanctioned site run by the Fincher camp, something Sony is apparently not too happy about either although it has done nothing but generate positive buzz for the film. Go figure.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo hits theaters on December 21. For more information on the film and all of my previous coverage click here.

Based on Stieg Larsson’s internationally best-selling novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a murder mystery looking as far back as 40 years at the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.
