What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #115

It was a busy week for me, not only did I see three films in theaters, I watched the three films I detail below (one of them twice) as well as watched Criterion’s recently released Blu-ray Kuroneko and Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings… I’ll have a review of Wrong Turn 4 for you in the next 48 hours (hopefully 24), but for now here are my thoughts on the four other films…

Taken (2009)

I watched this last night as my girlfriend and I were flipping around the channels and landed on it on FX, then a commercial came on and I grabbed the Blu-ray and popped it in. By the time we were done watching there was still 30 minutes left in the on air version… Commercials, what a nightmare. I also was watching the final moments of Purple Rain on VH1 after watching Taken and they actually went to a commercial after Prince performs “Purple Rain” and before the credits. Sheesh.

As for Taken, what a solid actioner, but I’m still curious what angle they’re going to take for the sequel. What makes this movie so great is that Neeson’s character will do absolutely anything to get his daughter back, there’s that personal connection. If the sequel involves him saving someone other than a family member the raw brutality won’t mean as much and will just be more gratuitous than necessary. We’ll see though.

Footloose (1984)

I watched this before writing my review of this weekend’s newly released remake, just so I could see if the new version was as much of a carbon copy as I thought it was. Turns out I was right.

Oh, and the moment at the end when Kevin Bacon jumps and does the flying kick is the number one example of the original doing it better.

The Thing (1982)

I watched the movie twice and listened to half of the audio commentary after seeing this weekend’s newly released prequel and after writing my review. This film is so perfect in my opinion. Even the trailer below is amazing and watching it made me want to watch the movie again.

So now I leave it to you, what did you watch this week?
