Box-Office Wrap-Up: ‘Real Steel’ is the Champ with $27.3 Million and a Second Place Showing for ‘Ides’

A new movie tops the box-office once again and it does it with over $25 million. Can you believe it? Of course you can, this week’s #1 is a family driven film with fighting robots. What else was going to finish first?
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 1 Weeks In A Row

Real Steel

I’m already wondering if Real Steel can repeat next weekend after a solid showing this weekend and reported audience approval of an A CinemaScore, and an A+ from both males and those under the age of 18. I knew kids would love this film, just as I mentioned in my review. No, I didn’t like it one bit, but that doesn’t have much to do with anything does it?

One of the big questions around this film now will continue to be its budget. There have been reports of am $80 million budget and rumblings of upwards of $150 million. The Hollywood Reporter pegs it at $110 million after Michigan tax rebates, so it still has work to do, though it did top the global box-office this weekend with an overall $49.4 million.

As far as predictions go, Laremy is back on track, hoping to start a new streak, while Kyle Coley had the closest reader prediction on the board with $26.5 million. Nice work.

Weekend: $27.3 million

RottenTomatoes Score: 59%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $29.7 million was $2.4m off for a percentage error of 8.79%.
Made on a tiny budget of only $12.5 million, which I explained detailed I say no, but I know there are people out there that certainly disagree.

When it comes to predictions Laremy was close once again, but Bustray was even closer with a $10.8 million prediction.

Weekend: $10.4 million / RottenTomatoes: 82%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $12.4 million, which is $2m off for a 19.23% error.
The drops on the next three films is an obvious sign of solid cinema resonating with viewers. The only problem with all three is none of them were able to make enough money on opening weekend, which means their totals don’t really reflect an all out success, but just look at the RottenTomatoes ratings for films two through four.
Weekend: $9.1 million (-34.5% drop) / Cume: $49 million / RottenTomatoes: 81%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $9.04 million, which is $0.06m off for a 0.66% error.
Did you see the Tinyballs spoof on “Saturday Night Live” last night? If not, click here.
Weekend: $7.5 million (-37.5% drop) / Cume: $49.2 million / RottenTomatoes: 95%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $7.9 million, which is $0.4m off for a 5.33% error.
It just didn’t make enough money out of the starting gate to make a splash, but this is a solid film I expect a lot of people will find on DVD and Blu-ray.
Weekend: $5.5 million (-36% drop) / Cume: $17.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 93%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $4.84 million, which is $0.66m off for a 12% error.
With only 1,161 theaters and a $2 million budget, this film continues to impress even if it didn’t impress the critics.
Weekend: $4.6 million (-48.9% drop) / Cume: $15.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 29%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $5.25 million, which is $0.65m off for a 14.13% error.
It’s about time for The Lion King to sleep tonight, but good lord has Disney tapped into a market here where they can really hope to make some big bucks on re-releasing films audiences clearly love and are willing to pay to see.
Weekend: $4.5 million (-57.5% drop) / Cume: $85.9 million / RottenTomatoes: 89%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $5.99 million, which is $1.49m off for a 33.11% error.
Did you read my article about how director Jim Sheridan wanted his name removed from this film? Yikes, not a good sign.
Weekend: $4.4 million (-45.7% drop) / Cume: $14.5 million / RottenTomatoes: 8%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $3.98 million, which is $0.42m off for a 9.55% error.
I think it’s weird Ben Stiller hosted “Saturday Night Live” last night when his new film Tower Heist doesn’t come out until November and Anna Faris is hosting next week when her new film came out last week. That’s just bad timing am I right?
Weekend: $3 million (-44.4% drop) / Cume: $10.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 23%

Laremy’s rank: Not Ranked
Hey Taylor Lautner’s film. How’s it hanging?
Weekend: $2.9 million (-48.2% drop) / Cume: $23.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 5%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $2.97 million, which is $0.07m off for a 2.41% error.

Elsewhere, The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence made $54,000 from 18 theaters, Dirty Girl made $17,500 from nine theaters and while Bad Teacher finally crossed the $100 million mark last weekend, Cowboys & Aliens is still $234,000 shy, making only $144,200 this weekend. Can it actually pull it out?

Next week I wonder, can Footloose or The Thing make enough money to beat Real Steel? I imagine, without looking at tracking numbers, Footloose will be the one to do it if either will, but is there enough interest in that film? I’ve also seen mixed reactions from the online sector as I will finally be seeing it tomorrow night for myself.
