‘Scream 5’ is a Possibility? I’m in, but I Hope Wes Craven Directs It

I am anxiously awaiting my Blu-ray review copy of Scream 4 of which I gave a “B+” in my review but critics, for the most part, did not like awarding it a 57% at RottenTomatoes. Audiences, as it turns out, weren’t overwhelmed either as it ended with $38 million at the domestic box-office and just over $97 million worldwide.

With a reported budget of $40 million and the first two films in the franchise each grossing over $100 million and Scream 3 making over $89 million things didn’t look too good for a sequel. However, in a new interview with MovieWeb director Wes Craven seems confident there will be a fifth film:

“Yes. The odds are that there will be (a Scream 5). It is something that Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclined to think that there will be (another sequel). Whether I will be a part of it or not? I don’t know. My contract gives me the first look. If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course I will be a part of it.”

The one thing out of that I key in on is that without Craven aboard I’m not all that interested, without him, what’s the point?

Craven goes on to say it is now up to screenwriter Kevin Williamson to come up with a script, “Going into (Scream 4), the first meeting I had with Kevin Williamson, he did sketch out a Scream 5 and 6,” Craven said. “The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable. If that happens, those two will come up with the concepts and an idea that is worth fulfilling.”

So far, nothing has happened as of yet with Craven telling Shock Til You Drop, “Bob [Weinstein] doesn’t typically call until there’s something down on paper or something a writer can pitch to me… so I don’t expect to hear anything until Bob has that.”

So I guess now it comes down to how many units the movie moves when it hits DVD and Blu-ray on October 4
