Steve Martin Gives Eddie Murphy a Bit of Oscar Hosting Advice in an Open Letter

It seemed the general consensus (there will always be detractors) upon hearing the news Eddie Murphy would be hosting this year’s Oscars was one of excitement or at least curiosity. It’s a topic everyone wants to comment on and Paramount is obviously excited as they’ve already moved Murphy’s A Thousand Words from January 13, 2012 to March 23, just under a month after the Oscars.

The latest to chime in is three-time Oscar host Steve Martin who last hosted the ceremony in 2010 alongside Alec Baldwin. Martin issued an open letter on his blog giving Murphy some tips on hosting the show. Here are a few select items

“Whatever you do, don’t have a co-host. They’re a big pain and they just end up breaking your SNL hosting record.”

“Start slimming down now. You look kinda paunchy in Norbit.”

“People always say it’s a disgrace that neither you nor I have ever won an Oscar, but they’re just being correct.”

“Fortunately, only you and I can get away with smuggling out an Oscar in our pants.”

“Remember to relax and have a good time while 12,000 livebloggers rip you to shreds.”

You can read the full letter over at Martin’s blog and you’ll get to see how well Eddie Murphy does as host on February 26, 2012 and you can always join me as I’ll once again be live-blogging the event… hopefully not ripping Eddie to shreds.
