It was announced earlier today that Pedro Almodovar will serve as the guest Artistic Director of this year’s edition of American Film Institute’s annual AFI FEST and will present the 25th anniversary screening of his film Law of Desire, which just so happens to coincide with both the 25th anniversary of his production company El Deseo S.A. and of the festival itself. I can only assume his latest film, The Skin I Live In will play at the festival, just as it did at Cannes and will in Toronto and New York and presumably Telluride. And speaking of The Skin I Live In we have the first domestic poster for the film courtesy of Yahoo.
I caught the film in France at Cannes and enjoyed it, saying “if art house ever delved into the world of darkly comic camp this would be that film.” Some have speculated the film wasn’t meant to be intentionally funny and had a problem with it as a result. I’m not sure there is any right or wrong way to interpret it, but one way will certainly have you enjoying it more, rather than if you look at it as an unintentionally funny farce.
I don’t want to say too much about the plot, just as I warned in my review, but I think it’s safe to say it revolves around Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas), a plastic surgeon who’s gone “mad scientist” since losing his wife and daughter.
You can check out the poster below and if you won’t be at one of the films mentioned above you will be able to catch The Skin I Live In in theaters beginning on October 14. You can read my full Cannes Film Festival review right here.
