‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ Hopes to Close the Gap Between ‘Harry Potter’ with IMAX Re-Release

Paramount is hoping to eek out a few more dollars for Transformers: Dark of the Moon with an IMAX re-release beginning this Friday, August 26 (via THR). It’s not a bad move as the summer is winding down and some of the IMAX screens begin to free up as Paramount will boast the film as “An IMAX 3D Experience” that has been digitally remastered with proprietary IMAX technology.

The film will play simultaneously with other movies already booked by IMAX in 246 theaters in North America from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8.

So far Transformers 3 has brought in $348.5 million domestically, plus another $747 million overseas. However, while the film would hope to catch Harry Potter and take the 2011 box-office crown there’s no chance it will catch the current box-office king, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which has taken in $366 million domestically and $900 million internationally for a worldwide cume over $1.26 billion. However, Transformers 3 likely has that second spot firmed up.

This is likely a final theatrical effort before the studio announces the DVD and Blu-ray release date, which has been rumored to be November 15 for quite some time.
