Weekend Box-Office: ‘Captain America’ Holds the Highest Superhero Opening of 2011… For Now

Well, based on the estimate, Captain America holds the summer’s highest opening for a superhero-based movie. However, with such a slim lead will it be able to hold the title?
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 0 Weeks In A Row
A massive 71.6% drop for the Harry Potter finale following its record-shattering opening weekend. Is it the biggest second weekend drop of all-time? No, not even close. That belongs to Undiscovered‘s 86.4%. However, when it comes to films that made a similar amount of money to that of Part 2, this actually is the largest drop, even more than the 70% drop The Twilight Saga: New Moon had back in 2009.

Part 2 is now up to $274 million and it’s going to be interesting to see where it finally ends up as it has now come back down to Earth. Will subsequent weekends also show larger drops than normal or will it carry on as the other films have and become the highest grossing of the franchise… domestically that is. The number to beat is $317.5 million from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, a film that actually had a higher second weekend than Part 2 did back in 2001.

Result: $48 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 with $71.059 million, which is $23.059m off for a 48.04% error.
If the estimates are correct, Friends with Benefits wasn’t able to top the opening weekend of No Strings Attached ($19.6 million). Does this mean the box-office draw of Portman and Kutcher is stronger than Timberlake and Kunis? Or does it mean the bad taste left by No Strings hurt Friends? Or does it mean one film about sex without romantic ties is all one year can handle?
Result: $18.5 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $23.375 million, which is $4.875m off for a 26.35% error.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon is still the year’s highest grossing film, now with $325 million to its name. Expectation would be for Harry Potter to beat it, and I haven’t looked yet, but do you have any contenders in mind to actually beat either of them over the course of the rest of the year?
Result: $12 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $10.1 million, which is $1.9m off for a 15.83% error.
The second R-rated comedy this weekend enjoyed a 34.1% drop in its third weekend as it has now tallied an impressive $82 million, putting it just outside the top 20 of 2011.
Result: $11.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $12.087 million, which is $0.387m off for a 3.31% error.
I still can’t believe this film was made for $80 million, but I also can’t believe people are still paying to see it and doing so to the tune of only a 29.4% drop. Are people now recommending this film to others or are people so mean they aren’t advising their friends to stay away? Harsh.
Result: $8.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $8.014 million, which is $0.686m off for a 7.89% error.
Do you think there’s still another $15 million in the Cars 2 tank? It’s up to $176.4 million domestically and $191.7 is the new goal, which would put it ahead of Toy Story‘s domestic total.
Result: $5.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $4.347 million, which is $1.353m off for a 23.74% error.
Is the audience for this film just too small for it to have succeeded on any major level?
Result: $5.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $4.714 million, which is $0.386m off for a 7.57% error.
Our third R-rated comedy in this weekend’s top ten and I thought there may be a fourth, but Bridesmaids couldn’t edge out Midnight in Paris.
Result: $2.6 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $2.519 million, which is $0.081m off for a 3.12% error.
I’m actually happy to see Midnight in Paris in the top ten over once again. It’s one of the best films of the year so far and has somehow managed to remain consistent at the bottom of the weekend top ten, not an easy feat.
Result: $1.8 million

Laremy’s rank: Not Ranked
