New Release Dates: Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel,’ Arnold’s ‘Last Stand’ and ‘Cabin in the Woods’

Some new release dates have been announced in the last couple of days, two of which are films set to hit theaters in 2013.

I’ll begin with the long-gestating release of Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods which is set for a April 13, 2012 release and stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as a young professional who visits a quaint cabin in the woods with a group of friends and ends up scratching the surface of something so massive and horrific that they can only begin to fathom it as time quickly runs out. The film was co-written by Joss Whedon (The Avengers) and also stars Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Kristen Connolly, Brian J. White, Amy Acker, Fran Kranz and Jesse Williams.

Next is news that Warner Bros. has officially moved Zack Snyder’s Superman flick, Man of Steel out of what was expected to be a December 2012 release to June 14, 2013. This isn’t a big surprise for the film which is being shepherded by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises). December 2012 is already loaded with highly anticipated releases including Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Ang Li’s Life of Pi, Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger, Judd Apatow’s untitled Knocked Up spin-off and Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. No reason to tangle with that lot if you don’t need to.

Man of Steel will now release just ahead of Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. prequel, Monsters University and in-between fellow superhero flicks in Disney’s Iron Man 3 on May 3 and Thor 2 on July 26. Of course, there are many other films slotted around the same frame such as Roland Emmerich’s Singularity (5/17), Fast Six (5/24), Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (7/12) and Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion starring Tom Cruise on July 19, but who’s counting?

And finally, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the big screen in The Last Stand for Lionsgate and director Ji-woon Kim (I Saw the Devil) has already landed in 2013’s dumping ground and a January 18, 2013 release.
