First Look at Emile Hirsch in Summit’s ‘The Darkest Hour’

Get ready as I can only assume the next three-five days will be filled with several of these “first look” articles as the San Diego Comic Con kicks off tomorrow and studios will be sending over new images, posters and trailers as they debut new footage for their upcoming films to the masses as the comic book convention in southern California gets underway.

For this post it’s the first look at The Darkest Hour a new sci-fi thriller from Right at Your Door helmer Chris Gorak starring Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby and Max Minghella. The story centers on five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack.

The studio has also set up a video blog at TheDarkestHourIsNear.com featuring a few videos (two of which I’ve included here along with the following description:

Ball lightning is a proposed atmospheric electrical phenomenon of which little is known. The term refers to reports of luminous, usually spherical objects which vary from pea-sized to several meters in diameter. It is usually associated with thunderstorms, but lasts considerably longer than the split-second flash of a lightning bolt. Many of the early reports say that the ball eventually explodes, sometimes with fatal consequences.

It is presently unknown whether these are actually related to any naturally occurring phenomenon. Scientific data on natural ball lightning are scarce. The true nature of ball lightning is still unknown. Until recently, ball lightning was often regarded as a fantasy or a hoax, but some serious scientific discussions and theories have attempted to explain it.

The 3D action-thriller will be released on December 23.
