Luke Evans to Play Bard the Bowman in ‘The Hobbit’

Just when you thought the casting for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit was complete another name gets added to the mix. Today it’s Deadline reporting Luke Evans, who plays Aramis in Paul W.S. Anderson’s upcoming The Three Musketeers, will play Bard the Grim (aka Bard the Bowman), a skilled archer and the heir of King Girion of Dale.

The role of Bard will play a larger role in the second film in a way I won’t spoil here for those that haven’t read “The Hobbit” or read it so long ago they have forgotten.

As for Evans, he has actually been on several of the shortlists of late for some major roles such as the lead in The Bourne Legacy which went to Jeremy Renner and the role of Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, which went to Joel Edgerton.

Production on The Hobbit is already underway in New Zealand with both films shooting at the same time. The first one, referred to as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will hit theaters on December 14, 2012 and second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is slated for release on December 13, 2013.
