Boom! Explosion! Bring On ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’!

I’ve been thinking this a lot lately, but just haven’t taken the time to say it: Bring on Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

So far this summer hasn’t yet provided much in the way of blockbuster entertainment. Thor got close, X-Men: First Class was more of a standard actioner than a big blockbuster film and Super 8 was more in line with classic summer entertainment rather than the mega-blockbusters Michael Bay tends to deliver. That said, I think I’m ready. I think I’m ready for some noise and I’m not sure if I won’t regret saying that.

The noisiest production we’ve had so far this year was Battle: Los Angeles and while it wasn’t a very good film, I managed to find some enjoyment in the action. I gave that film a “C+” when I reviewed it, poking fun at the banal storyline and cliched character building, but it had its moments in the action worth watching. By comparison, it was along the same lines of the first two Transformers films, both of which were big and dumb. The hope is that Bay has somehow managed to turn this third attempt into not only something big and loud, but something big, loud and coherent. I’m even excited to see it in 3D, which is the first time I think I’ve been able to say that since Avatar. Can Bay make my eyes shake in their sockets and tell a story at the same time?

The reason I decided to bring this up now is because Paramount just sent over eight new stills from the film, which you can browse in the slideshow at the top of this post. The film is set to hit theaters on June 29 where it will set out to attain massive numbers over a six-day weekend ending on July 4.

I have already read tracking has it making more than $175 million over those first six days, which I initially thought was quite astonishing, but was then reminded on Twitter that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made $200 million in its first five days. So perhaps that number isn’t as impressive as I initially thought, but it does add one more piece of the puzzle to the Transformers vs. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 box-office death match I proposed back in April. That said, I decided to include that poll here as well to see if we can’t get a few more votes:
