Weekend Box-Office: ‘Super 8’ Surpasses Expectations with $37 Million Opening Weekend

No surprise at #1, although it does look like J.J. Abrams’ ode to Steven Spielberg did actually over-perform.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 6 Weeks In A Row
Dipping 54% from its opening weekend as suspected yesterday, it is now time to see just what kind of legs X-Men: First Class has. The one positive it has heading into next weekend is that it looks like it’s a much different film than Green Lantern, but I can’t help but thinking audiences won’t be interested in supporting two superhero films at once. On top of that, which film is a better period piece, X-Men or Super 8?

X-Men is now just shy of $100 million at $98.9.

Result: $25 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $24.79 million, which is $0.21m off for a 0.84% error.
Only a 40% drop for the much discussed blockbuster comedy that has now managed over $216 million domestically and is now the current 2011 box-office leader, just ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean and Fast Five. Can you believe that?
Result: $18.5 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $15.84 million, which is $2.66m off for a 14.38% error.
The first one ended with $215 million domestically, the sequel is now just shy of $127 million. The plan is for several sequels in this franchise, but with the budget on this one costing a reported $150 million before prints and advertising I have to believe DreamWorks is going to try a little harder on the story for the next one and I can almost guarantee it will have some kind of crazy subtitle. Any chance this film would have done better had it gone with the working title Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom?
Result: $16.6 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $13.85 million, which is $2.75m off for a 16.57% error.
It’s #2 at the domestic box-office for the year with just shy of $209 million, and overseas Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is a $678 million juggernaut. Pirates 5 has got to be headed our way within the next two years… don’tcha think?

I mean, this thing is looking at $1 billion worldwide, how could they not make another one.

Result: $10.8 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $7.6 million, which is $3.2m off for a 29.63% error.
The drops on this bad boy are tiny from one week to the next. This week, only a 15.8% drop as it now crosses the $123 million mark. The Hangover 2 may have made more money so far, but I would be willing to bet if they made a Bridesmaids 2 it would perform off the charts as well.
Result: $10.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $9.15 million, which is $0.95m off for a 9.41% error.
There’s a lot of irony in this title, especially considering the emphasis on NOT. Perhaps they should just remove the NOT and add a frowny face at the end of the title and see if they could potentially pull in some sympathy tickets next weekend.
Result: $6.2 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $5.55 million, which is $0.65m off for a 10.48% error.
You can always tell when Laremy really likes a movie and wants it to perform well, he gets really bullish on the number. That’s okay, I can get down with that, I’d love to see this movie do even better than it is as well. It is now up to $14 million and I wonder just how far Sony Classics plans on expanding it.
Result: $6.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $11.56 million, which is $5.46m off for a 89.51% error.
9. Thor
Thor sits at $173 million for the year domestically. Will it win the superhero box-office crown or will Green Lantern or Captain America dethrone it? My money is on Green Lantern, but the later than normal press screening I have next week doesn’t bode well for its quality… at least WB is being nice enough to offer press a 2D screening as well as a 3D. One guess as to which version I RSVP’d for.
Result: $2.3 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $1.91 million, which is $0.39m off for a 16.96% error.
Over $205 million for this one domestically and Fast Six can’t get here fast enough as far as I’m concerned.
Result: $1.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $1.49 million, which is $0.21m off for a 12.35% error.

Just out of the top ten at #11 is Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life with $875,126 from 47 theaters. It finally hits Seattle next weekend, I wonder if it’s about time it made it into the top ten.

And, in its second weekend, the fabulous Beginners brought in $255,000 from 19 theaters. Keep an eye out, hopefully this one will come to your town, it’s one of the best of the year so far.

Finally, next weekend sees the release of Green Lantern and the penguin feces-obsessed Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Care to wager some early predictions?
