Box-Office Oracle: ‘Super 8’ Looks to Dethrone ‘X-Men: First Class’

Super 8 looks like a safe call at the top, aimed at the family demo, even if it won’t dominate in the manner of the typical summer offering. Let’s break it down!
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row
It will undoubtedly face the biggest dip of the weekend, as per normal for a comic book movie champion, but I think it will have nice legs starting in week three. This is a film that demographically hits 60 years worth of audiences, with the only caveat being that potential untapped audiences probably aren’t aware of it.
Prediction: $24.79 million
$75m more is needed domestically for the sequel to surpass the original, and I’m not too hopeful there. It’s only putting up $3m dollar weekdays right now, plus a few more weekends until it is out of theaters, so the math doesn’t add up.
Prediction: $15.84 million
The news is much bleaker for the panda. The previous version cleared $631m, with plenty of that coming internationally, but this one stands at only $244m worldwide.
Prediction: $13.85 million
Sony Classics, on the other hand, drilled this release. They started small, built word of mouth, and are now pushing wide.
Prediction: $11.56 million
Only Romania and Slovenia have brought in international dollars for Bridesmaids, what gives? Is this an entirely domestic phenomenon?
Prediction: $9.15 million
Now holds the bronze medal worldwide for the Pirates franchise.
Prediction: $7.6 million
Not enough theaters, not enough marketing, not enough demand. Other than that, pretty well set!
Prediction: $5.55 million
9. Thor
Australia came through with $20m in box office receipts for this film, which has to be more than it cost to sign Chris Hemsworth. Result.
Prediction: $1.91 million
Seven straight weeks in the top ten. You’ll be missed Fast Five.
Prediction: $1.49 million

How say you? Daring enough to call the X-Men: First Class repeat? Am I too low on Super 8? And what do you make of Judy Moody? Predictions away!
