Zach Galifianakis Drops Some ‘Hangover 3’ Plot Details

Talk of The Hangover Part III started just as soon as The Hangover Part II made over $205 million worldwide in just its first five days. Craig Mazin is returning to script the sequel, which director Todd Phillips has already said “will not revolve around a wedding, and it will not revolve around a forgotten night.” So just what exactly will it be about?

Well, in a cover interview for Rolling Stone, Galifianakis told the mag, “They want to do a Hangover III. I’m getting fricking phone calls already.” As far as the plot goes, he said he heard it will ditch the format of the first two and focus on Alan (Galifianakis) after he escapes from a mental institution with help from the wolf pack — Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha).

Mazin was previously quoted saying, “I think the third movie ends with Doug [Justin Bartha’s character] staring at a row of crosses in a graveyard. It’s everyone — his wife, his family is dead, everybody from the first movie is dead. Somebody shows up and tells him his dog is dead.” It seemed like an off-the-cuff quote and not necessarily an ultimate goal, but based on what the sequel offered, if it ended that way it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

Since that massive opening weekend, The Hangover Part II has so far made $192.3 million domestically and over $343 million worldwide. The idea of making a third film to complete the trilogy isn’t as much an idea but a financial necessity at this point. Here’s to hoping they’re able to deliver something a little better this time around.
