Box-Office Wrap-Up: ‘X-Men: First Class’ Takes the Top Spot with $56 Million

A superhero movie won the weekend. Big surprise. However, I asked readers yesterday morning if they could find any wide release, major studio superhero franchise films that didn’t manage to win the weekend when they were released. I was too lazy to do the digging, but you guys weren’t and you brought to my attention movies such as Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Blade: Trinity, Catwoman, Elektra and each attempt at making a Punisher film. Nice work, now let’s have a look at how the latest one did…
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row
Yeah, it’s a 62.2% dip from last weekend, but this thing was front-loaded due to what turned out to be massive anticipation so I’m not going to say this is disappointing by any means. The film is now over $185 million and it’s hard to look at that as a bad thing. Are you ready for The Hangover 3?
Result: $32.4 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $36.097 million, which is $3.697m off for a 11.41% error.
Kung Fu Panda 2 is now the tenth film to crack the $100 million mark for 2011, but I don’t see it reaching the $215 million the original pulled in. Makes sense, it’s not as good.
Result: $24.3 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $22.875 million, which is $1.425m off for a 5.86% error.
Pirates is nearing $200 million domestically as this week it moved to just over $190 million. Add the more than $535 million it has made overseas and you are looking at a film that has made $726 million worldwide. Yeah, they should probably consider making that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 as originally planned.
Result: $18 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $20.312 million, which is $2.312m off for a 12.84% error.
Here is yet another $100 million earner for the year. Good for them, it deserved it.
Result: $12.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $12.578 million, which is $0.478m off for a 3.95% error.
6. Thor
I wonder if they’ll make a Thor 2 or if this was just a one and done character to only be seen in The Avengers franchise going forward.
Result: $4.2 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $4.339 million, which is $0.139m off for a 3.31% error.
Fast Five just cracked the $200 million mark this weekend and is easily the biggest of the franchise.
Result: $3.2 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $2.77 million, which is $0.43m off for a 13.44% error.
It’s in only 147 theaters and after this weekend it has now made just shy of $7 million, which means this one has already more than doubled the returns of You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger but it has a ways to go if it plans on bringing in more than the $40 million Hannah and Her Sisters brought in back in ’86.
Result: $2.9 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $3.67 million, which is $0.77m off for a 26.55% error.
I’ll talk about this one in the next box…
Result: $0.865 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $0.652 million, which is $0.213m off for a 24.62% error.
Something Borrowed and Jumping the Broom opened on the same weekend. Jumping the Broom has made more money than Something Borrowed on all five weekends since the films released. However, Something Borrowed has somehow managed to make more money overall. I’m sure there is a demographic study to find here that would tell us something about the two audiences for these two films. Not sure it would be interesting, but I’d like to see the results.
Result: $0.835 million

Laremy’s rank: Not Ranked

In other news, Focus’ new release the wonderful Beginners opened in five theaters and brought home $135,000 for a $27,000 per theater average and the Weinstein Co. bowed Submarine, which made $40,800. I’ve heard it is quite good, but missed due to my time in Cannes.

Finally, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life added 16 theaters to last weekend’s four and brought in $621,000 for a $31,050 per theater average.

Now the question turns to next weekend. Do you think J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 will take the top spot or will X-Men have long enough legs to remain at #1?
