Weekend Box-Office: ‘Rio’ is the Current 2011 Opening Weekend Champ While ‘Scream 4’ Sags in Second

Well, Laremy had one wildly wrong prediction. In fact, I think it’s the first time he’s ever been this far off on a prediction. I may be wrong. He probably knows better than me, but let’s not make him feel too bad for it… the numbers sort of take care of that.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 0 Weeks In A Row
Slash and burn. I gotta say, this is a big disappointment. After $7.9 million on Friday, this thing couldn’t even reach $20 million. I enjoyed it a lot, and the CinemaScore was a reported B-, but apparently people were more interested in an animated blue bird than the return of Ghostface.
As for user predictions, well, you all followed Laremy’s lead and some of you went even higher so no kudos this week as Scream 4 duped us all. Question now is, will it be able to holdover a little better after such a minimal opening? On a budget of $40 million it should be fine, but I’m not willing to bet on a Scream 5 at the moment.
Result: $19.2 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 with $44.55 million, which is $25.35m off for a 132.03% error.
Only a 30.2% drop for Soul Surfer in its second weekend as it has now racked up just under $20 million on an $18 million budget. That A+ CinemaScore that was reported last week sure is showing the power of word of mouth.
Result: $7.4 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $6.89 million, which is $0.51m off for a 6.89% error.
I can’t tell you how happy I am to see Hanna still going strong. A 40.8% dip from last weekend when it bounced up to #2 once the actuals came out and who knows, maybe it will leap frog Soul Surfer this week. It still remains the top earning film that opened last week with over $23 million, which is really saying something considering the marketing money spent on…
Result: $7.3 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $9.51 million, which is $2.21m off for a 30.27% error.
With a $40 million budget I wonder how WB eyes this film. It opens in the UK next week, which I am guessing will see a nice return, but I would have to assume the major thought here is “Did we really need to remake Arthur?”
Result: $6.9 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $7.58 million, which is $0.68m off for a 9.86% error.
Only a 26.8% drop in its third weekend and Insidious is showing the kind of legs Dimension hopes Scream 4 can muster even after losing 186 theaters and going up against the latest installment in the slasher franchise.
I will remind you again this film was made for only $1.5 million and has now managed over $35 million domestically with international dollars yet to be accounted for. Between this and Soul Surfer, FilmDistrict is enjoying the success of their first two releases.
Result: $6.8 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $7.5 million, which is $0.7m off for a 10.29% error.
Source Code is also hanging around nicely with only a 27.2% in also its third weekend. It has now earned just shy of $37 million on a $32 million budget and as of last weekend has also added $13 million in foreign sales. At this point I am excited to hear the announcement of what Duncan Jones will be doing next.
Result: $6.3 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $5.62 million, which is $0.68m off for a 10.79% error.
A nice return for Robert Redford’s historical piece. Released in only 707 theaters the film managed a $5,550 per theater average. And while Rio managed $10,455 per theater, it was the Italian film Double Hour releasing in two theaters that took the per theater crown, opening in two theaters and taking in $15,400 per.
Only a few readers predicted a return for The Conspirator so I guess that means John PT’s $2.2 million prediction takes the cake.
Result: $3.9 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $2.82 million, which is $1.08m off for a 27.69% error.
A 58.4% drop for Your Highness in its second weekend. Look fast, this is the last you’ll hear of it until three months from now when you’re bombarded with DVD and Blu-ray ads.
Result: $3.8 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $5.15 million, which is $1.35m off for a 35.53% error.
Outside of the top ten a couple new releases are worth talking about. Atlas Shrugged: Part I took in a solid $1.6 million from 300 theaters and IFC’s The Princess of Montpensier earned $23,400 from three theaters, the latter of which has received rather good reviews, which tells me people must be seeing a different film than I saw at Cannes last year. Because that movie was a redundant bore.
