Trailer for Cannes Competition Entry ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Starring Emily Browning

I am just now starting to dig through the films announced early this morning that will be featured at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and the first one to make noise around the Internet is writer-director Julia Leigh’s debut feature Sleeping Beauty, an Australian presentation starring Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) in the lead role as Lucy. The synopsis as provided by the production company Transmission Films reads as follows:

A disenchanted and financially strapped university student (Browning) accepts work as a sleeper in a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ chamber. The first man to visit Lucy venerates her youth and beauty. The second is sadistic. Nonetheless she returns…

The film co-stars Michael Dorman, Mirrah Foulkes and Rachael Blake and perhaps most notably, when watching the trailer it’s presented by Jane Campion (The Piano). Suffice to say, this already looks like a massive step up from Sucker Punch for Browning. I’m not sure Campion would have similarly kind words for that feature.
