GK Films is the Latest to Acquire ‘Tomb Raider’ Film Rights

Back in January 2009 the rights to the Lara Croft franchise, based on the Eidos videogame, went to Time Warner as it upped its stake to 19.92% in Eidos the month prior. It appears those rights didn’t last long as their version never got past the writing stage.

Now, GK Films has acquired the feature film rights to Tomb Raider and will reboot the action-adventure franchise aiming for a 2013 release for the first film.

Everyone remembers Angelina Jolie starring as the busty title adventurer back in 2001 and 2003 when her two films grossed a total of $432 million at the worldwide box office. Now it appears it’s time for a new actress to take up the mantle. But who?

Back in February 2009 I put together a list of Top Ten Actresses to Replace Angelina Jolia as Lara Croft. The list now looks rather dated, but it looked like this:

  1. Rhona Mitra
  2. Kate Beckinsale
  3. Summer Glau
  4. Rosario Dawson
  5. Megan Fox
  6. Sienna Miller
  7. Jessica Biel
  8. Emily Blunt
  9. Anne Hathaway
  10. Nikki Reed

Readers obviously offered up several alternate names including Aishwarya Rai, Natalie Portman, Olivia Wilde, Michelle Monaghan, Eliza Dushku, Jessica Alba, Charlize Theron, Odette Yustman, Milla Jovovich, Alexa Davalos, Gemma Arterton, Michelle Rodriguez and Sienna Guillory. Any of those names pique your interest?
