You voted and the results are in. Featured below are the results from the user poll I posted on Thursday as well as my predictions for comparison. Most of our predictions are the same, but on five of them we do find differences and the users have some different runners-up in a few of the categories.
I’ve added a few thoughts to each category below where I felt there was something to say, otherwise, here are the results. And remember to be here in less than three hours from now as myself and Laremy Legel will be here live-blogging tonight’s Oscars. Stay tuned, the fun has only just begun.
Best Motion Picture of the Year

WINNER: The King’s Speech RUNNER-UP: The Social Network |
WINNER: The King’s Speech RUNNER-UP: The Social Network |
QUICK NOTE: This one wasn’t even close, 385 votes for The King’s Speech to 196 for The Social Network and outside of the top two, Inception was the closest of the remaining eight with a measly 58 votes. |
Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: Natalie Portman (Black Swan) RUNNER-UP: Annette Bening (The Kids are All Right) |
WINNER: Natalie Portman (Black Swan) RUNNER-UP: Annette Bening (The Kids are All Right) |
QUICK NOTE: Only one acting race was close and this wasn’t one of them as Portman stomped Bening, 616 votes to 53. It was the largest margin of victory among the acting categories with Portman receiving 85.9% of the votes. |
Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) RUNNER-UP: Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) |
WINNER: Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) RUNNER-UP: James Franco (127 Hours) |
QUICK NOTE: The acting race wasn’t close either with Colin Firth receiving 81.2% of the votes, though the users and I disagree on the runner-up, but hardly by much as Franco received 50 votes and Eisenberg received 34. |
Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: Christian Bale (The Fighter) RUNNER-UP: Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech) |
WINNER: Christian Bale (The Fighter) RUNNER-UP: Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech) |
QUICK NOTE: Another virtual landslide as Bale received the most votes over Geoffrey Rush with 585 to 87. |

MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: Melissa Leo (The Fighter) RUNNER-UP: Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech) |
WINNER: Melissa Leo (The Fighter) RUNNER-UP: Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) |
QUICK NOTE: The closest acting race was rather close as users gave Melissa Leo 48% of the votes with Hailee Steinfeld a modest second with 27% of the votes. My runner-up, Helena Bonham Carter, only received 14% of the votes coming in third. |
Best Animated Feature Film of the Year
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: Toy Story 3 RUNNER-UP: How to Train Your Dragon |
WINNER: Toy Story 3 RUNNER-UP: How to Train Your Dragon |
QUICK NOTE: This wasn’t even a contest. Toy Story 3 received 90% of the votes. |
Achievement in Art Direction
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: Alice in Wonderland RUNNER-UP: The King’s Speech |
WINNER: Inception RUNNER-UP: Alice in Wonderland |
QUICK NOTE: Now we start getting into more interesting territory as users went for Inception, a film that I didn’t even have in my top two. Do they know something I don’t or is this just a matter of a fan favorite being shown preference? We’ll know the winner soon enough as this, along with Cinematography, will be the first two Oscars handed out tonight. |
Achievement in Cinematography
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: True Grit (Roger Deakins) RUNNER-UP: The King’s Speech (Danny Cohen) |
WINNER: True Grit (Roger Deakins) RUNNER-UP: Inception (Wally Pfister) |
QUICK NOTE: Readers and I agree on Deakins for the win, but we disagree on the potential runner-up. Again Inception is shown favor. |
Achievement in Costume Design
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: The King’s Speech (Jenny Beaven) RUNNER-UP: True Grit (Mary Zophres) |
WINNER: Alice in Wonderland (Colleen Atwood) RUNNER-UP: The King’s Speech (Jenny Beaven) |
QUICK NOTE: I mentioned in my predictions how no Tim Burton film ever nominated for Best Art Direction has ever lost and no Tim Burton film nominated for Best Costumes has ever won and yet, the readers went against history in both cases. It was a very close race though with Alice beating The King’s Speech 268 votes to 252. It’s nice to see a few of the tech categories will be interesting to look forward to. |
Achievement in Directing
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) RUNNER-UP: David Fincher (The Social Network) |
WINNER: David Fincher (The Social Network) RUNNER-UP: Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) |
QUICK NOTE: The readers have spoken and they have spoken loudly as David Fincher dominated the reader poll as he topped Hooper with 64% of the vote, 415 votes to 137. I think one thing is for certain, one of us will be right. |
Best Documentary Feature
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: Inside Job RUNNER-UP: Exit through the Gift Shop |
WINNER: Inside Job RUNNER-UP: Exit through the Gift Shop |
QUICK NOTE: The closest race on the board was in the Documentary category as Inside Job eeked out a victory over Banksy’s Exit through the Gift Shop by only 3 votes, 233 to 230. From what I’m hearing, though, Waste Land could upset them both. |
Achievement in Makeup
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: The Wolfman RUNNER-UP: Barney’s Version |
WINNER: The Wolfman RUNNER-UP: Barney’s Version |
QUICK NOTE: Based on the predictions Rick Baker will be going home with his seventh Oscar. |
Achievement in Film Editing
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: The Social Network RUNNER-UP: The King’s Speech |
WINNER: The Social Network RUNNER-UP: Black Swan |
QUICK NOTE: The Social Network is the clear front-runner here and the only thing to stop it will be favorism for The King’s Speech across the board. The readers gave Network 69.9% of the votes. |
Best Foreign Language Film of the Year
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: In a Better World RUNNER-UP: Incendies |
WINNER: Biutiful RUNNER-UP: In a Better World |
QUICK NOTE: I just don’t see Biutiful winning this the way the readers do, though it was a close race with Biutiful winning over In a Better World by only 15 votes. |
Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score)
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: The King’s Speech RUNNER-UP: The Social Network |
WINNER: The Social Network RUNNER-UP: Inception |
QUICK NOTE: No reason not to think The Social Network can’t win this category, but I would be particularly happy if Hans Zimmer’s Inception score played spoiler. |
Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song)
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3 RUNNER-UP: “I See the Light” from Tangled |
WINNER: “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3 RUNNER-UP: “If I Rise” from 127 Hours |
QUICK NOTE: This seems like a category where the winner is being chosen by default. Will this be the year one of Randy Newman’s Toy Story songs finally wins? |

Original Screenplay
MY PICK | USER PICK |
WINNER: The King’s Speech (David Seidler) RUNNER-UP: Inception (Christopher Nolan) |
WINNER: The King’s Speech (David Seidler) RUNNER-UP: Inception (Christopher Nolan) |
QUICK NOTE: Now this category was much closer as only 26 votes separated the two nominees. Seidler’s King’s Speech script received 281 votes to 255 votes for Nolan’s Inception script. Pretty much a toss-up heading into tonight. |
