2011 Oscars Live Blog: Oscar Winners and Commentary

[4:56:48 PM] Brad says: Hey look, you made it.

[4:57:15 PM] Laremy says: Natalie Portman is happy to be here. Everyone retweet that.

[4:57:47 PM] Brad says: Portman does not seem comfortable. Just sayin’.

[4:59:39 PM] Brad says: Kelly’s pick of the night is Jennifer Lawrence sporting a dress that reminds me of Scarlett Johansson’s dress from a few year’s back… You know the one.

[5:00:18 PM] Laremy says: Critiquing Natalie Portman’s fashion is pointless. Who is going to rip a pregnant gal? She could have shown up wearing a barrel and suspenders and come off as “glowing”. These are the facts of the case … and they are undisputed.

[5:00:26 PM] Brad says: Okay, we’re back on ABC… done with E! and we are 30 minutes away.

[5:02:32 PM] Brad says: Wow, Portman looks much better on ABC than she did on E! Kudos to ABC for hiring a better crew, Natalie thanks you.

[5:04:26 PM] Laremy says: James Franco is good people. And I do mean “people,” because he is involved in more projects than any mortal man.

[5:05:44 PM] Brad says: A little awkward sit down with Franco now. Got to admit, this guy is growing on me. He seems really down to earth, but whoever this lady interviewing him is strangely stalkerish.

[5:08:31 PM] Brad says: “Has motherhood changed your approach to acting?” That’s an actual question from Maria Menounos to Sandra Bullock. You don’t need to be a genius to ask red carpet questions folks.

[5:09:28 PM] Brad says: Ben Mankiewicz pretty much just called all the Best Actor nominees “not very good high school football teams” and Colin Firth is Brett Favre. What the what?

[5:12:19 PM] Laremy says: I am naming Kimmel the new king of late night. There, done.

[5:13:30 PM] Laremy says: I don’t know why everyone is always ripping Keith Urban’s lady hair. I like his lady hair!

[5:14:12 PM] Brad says: I heard at the Weinstein Co. party last night everyone got iPads. I can’t confirm this, but I heard it.

[5:17:53 PM] Laremy says: We are so close to the actual awards! And they are leading off with one of the four picks I have different from Brad, Art Direction. That one is going to King’s Speech, but B-Luv went with Alice in Wonderland. That’s what we call in the business call “wrongsies”.

[5:22:22 PM] Laremy says: Can’t wait to not watch ABC’s new show, Body of Proof!

[5:24:19 PM] Brad says: Oh man, here’s that weird girl again, this time interviewing Halle Berry. Wish I caught her name.

[5:27:18 PM] Brad says: Okay, this red carpet junk is coming to a close… opening performance about to begin.

[5:27:19 PM] Laremy says: Three minutes until liftoff.

[5:30:13 PM] Laremy says: Just to clarify, Brad picked 21 categories, I picked 24, so we might have to go to the winning percentage to see who wins the dollar.

[5:31:51 PM] Brad says: Show is starting, kicking off with a montage set to “In the Hall of the Mountain King” as performed by Reznor and Ross for The Social Network.

[5:33:18 PM] Brad says: Things are kicking off with an Inception parody as Franco and Hathaway are taking a trip into Alex Baldwin’s dreams for Oscar hosting tips.

[5:33:51 PM] Brad says: This reminds me a lot of something I would see before the MTV Movie Awards, not the Oscars.

[5:34:19 PM] Brad says: The Fighter sequence is pretty good though, “Junk bag!”

[5:34:32 PM] Laremy says: James Franco and Anne Hathaway open with a comedy montage involving the Best Picture nominees. Plenty of laughs to be had.

[5:36:49 PM] Laremy says: These kids have nice comedic timing. And getting Alec Baldwin involved was solid.

[5:38:17 PM] Brad says: And finally Franco and Hathaway make their way on stage. Clap, clap, and clap again… cheer!

[5:39:29 PM] Brad says: “It used to be, you get naked, you get nominated. Not anymore.” – Anne Hathaway

[5:41:02 PM] Brad says: This is odd, it’s like a child’s first elementary school play. Not exactly digging it.

[5:41:19 PM] Laremy says: It’s getting a bit awkward. The jokes are decent but the cadence is slightly off.

[5:42:23 PM] Brad says: An ode to Gone with the Wind is now playing. You know, because it’s a movie.

[5:43:12 PM] Laremy says: Tom Hanks will present Best Art Direction. I really enjoyed his work in Big. Shame he hasn’t done much since.

[5:43:41 PM] Brad says: This is very strange, now a Titanic shout out.

[5:44:09 PM] Brad says: If I am hearing correctly this is becuase these films all won Art Direction, Cinematography and Best Picture

[5:45:09 PM] Brad says: My pick here was Alice in Wonderland. That’s a 1-1.

[5:46:13 PM] Brad says: Oh, and for the official announcement… Alice in Wonderland wins for Best Art Direction.

[5:46:35 PM] Laremy says: B lerg. Alice in Wonderland takes it and my dreams of a perfect ballot go right down the tubes.

[5:48:02 PM] Laremy says: I had True Grit for Cinematography, but happy to see Inception win.

[5:50:02 PM] Brad says: Okay, small adjustment. Having a few issues over here, but Wally Pfister wins for Cinematography. I didn’t have that one as Roger Deakins has now lost nine straight times.

[5:52:27 PM] Brad says: Kirk Douglas is now on the scene.

[5:53:32 PM] Brad says: Oh, Douglas is announcing Supporting Actress. Seems like an odd choice.

[5:53:57 PM] Brad says: I have Melissa Leo here, but Carter could pull the upset.

[5:57:57 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Melissa Leo for The Fighter

[5:59:52 PM] Brad says: Leo is taking her time. Now she just dropped an F-bomb. Keepin’ it classy.

[6:00:07 PM] Laremy says: Back on track, 1 for 3. Kirk Douglas does his best to steal every single bit of Melissa Leo’s spotlight, but she’s still got to be thrilled her personal ad campaign didn’t sabotage her.

[6:00:28 PM] Brad says: Quick awards tally check, I’m 2-3, never saw that Inception win coming. Still can’t believe Deakins lost again.

[6:00:50 PM] Brad says: I guess they aren’t playing people off tonight.

[6:01:51 PM] Brad says: Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis are out to present Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short.

[6:02:16 PM] Laremy says: So far the show has really lacked momentum.

[6:02:48 PM] Brad says: Toy Story 3 has got to be the Animated Feature winner. Oh, and the backdrop is changing again. This is a bit silly, not to mention time consuming.

[6:03:30 PM] Brad says: Oh, we’re going with short first. I didn’t see these, but I’ll guess Day and Night because it’s from Pixar. But I hear The Gruffalo is pretty good.

[6:03:56 PM] Brad says: And the Oscar goes to The Lost Thing.

[6:04:15 PM] Brad says: So I guess that Day and Night call was a wrong-o.

[6:04:56 PM] Laremy says: As per normal, offering a prediction in the short categories proves foolhardy.

[6:05:27 PM] Brad says: Oh, I see, play off the shorts winners. They aren’t cool enough.

[6:05:48 PM] Brad says: Now for Best Animated Feature

[6:07:09 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Toy Story 3

[6:08:20 PM] Brad says: Commercial time and bathroom break.

[6:08:39 PM] Laremy says: It looks as though I’m only two for five so far. On the plus side, we’re enjoying quesadillas.

[6:12:24 PM] Brad says: Okay, screenplay categories coming up… predictions anyone? I have The King’s Speech and The Social Network.

[6:13:00 PM] Brad says: At the moment Hathaway is introducing a nod to the first Academy Awards.

[6:13:37 PM] Laremy says: Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem are here to announce Best Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. Let’s do this!

[6:13:47 PM] Brad says: First up is adapted screenplay.

[6:14:44 PM] Brad says: And the winner is The Social Network written by Aaron Sorkin.

[6:16:17 PM] Laremy says: Playing off Sorkin. Sorry fella, they must not be West Wing fans.

[6:16:55 PM] Brad says: Now for Original Screenplay…

[6:18:23 PM] Brad says: And the winner is The King’s Speech written by David Seidler

[6:19:22 PM] Brad says: And the battle has begun… The King’s Speech vs. The Social Network… Gives us something to look forward to as the night goes on.

[6:19:47 PM] Brad says: As for my predictions I’m 5 for 6, how about you?

[6:20:00 PM] Laremy says: Happy to be back to above .500 on the picks. But two out of the next three, Best Foreign Film and Best Score, aren’t sure things. So I reserve the right to start whining again.

[6:20:32 PM] Laremy says: Oh, and I’m 4 for 7, which is not as good. Thanks for the inquiry.

[6:21:40 PM] Brad says: It’s a commercial break so I am adding a page break. Off to page three we go.
