The trailer only shows her once as it focuses largely on prat falls, sex jokes, fall-down gags, Luis Guzman in a too-small, Robin costume, Helen Mirren and Russell Brand as the titular star of Arthur, a remake of the 1981 Oscar-winning comedy starring Dudley Moore as the title character. Arthur is a boozy playboy set to inherit a fortune if he marries an heiress his family thinks will make something out of him. However, he falls in love with a working-class woman and turns to his valet for help when his family makes him choose between money and love.
So why would I ask about Greta Gerwig in the headline? Because she proved to be the best part of the recent rom-com No Strings Attached and was one of the only redeemable things about last year’s Greenberg. So why wouldn’t I think she would steal the show here?
Sure, you have your Batman reference that is likely to earn blog headlines (as it already has) and Mirren dons a Darth Vader mask and says, “Wash your winkie,” which is sure to get a rise out of the fanboys of the Force. But the fact the trailer is focusing so hard on these aspects and completely overlooking the fact Gerwig plays the character at the main crux of the story tells me we may be in for a bit of a bumpy ride.
Frequent “Modern Family” director Jason Winer is making his feature directorial debut with Arthur, which Warner Bros. is set to release on April 8 opposite the likes of Hanna and Your Highness, which means there will likely be a comedic stand-off for the weekend’s top spot. Who will win out?
