Box-Office Wrap-Up: Feb. 4 – Feb. 6, 2011

Thanks to Gitesh Pandya of Box-Office Guru‘s Twitter post I didn’t even have to look this up, but the top twenty at the box-office this weekend is down big from previous years. Down 23% from 2010, 29% from 2009 and 30% versus 2008. The top ten made just over $70 million. So, please understand if I don’t spend much time analyzing the results.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row
In second is the awful Sanctum. I wonder how many people came out of this just as upset as I did. On the prediction side of things only therapycase1279 took a number below double digits so according to “Price is Right” rules he would win with his $7 million prediction, but DamienB was the closest with an $11.4 million guess.
Result: $9.2 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $11.88 million, which is $2.68m off for a 29.13% error.
This weekend I was having dinner with some friends and all four girls at the table asked me why they don’t make movies like they used to as they reminisced on old rom-coms they loved. I thought it was an interesting conversation since two of them had seen No Strings Attached and liked it, but none of them would consider it great, just a good time waster.
Result: $8.4 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $8.58 million, which is $0.18m off for a 2.14% error.
Seems people are doing their best to catch the presumed Best Picture winner before the Oscars. Laremy almost hit this one on the head, but in his effort to be extremely precise he should have rounded up a notch.
Result: $8.3 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $8.29 million, which is $0.01m off for a 0.12% error.
It is now over $87 million and yet it has a loooooong way to go to make up for that $120 million budget. I don’t even think DVD and Blu-ray sales will put this one in the black.
Result: $6.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $6.84 million, which is $0.74m off for a 12.13% error.
A 62% drop from opening weekend to the next is not a good sign.
Result: $5.5 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $7.1 million, which is $1.6m off for a 29.09% error.
And a 53% dip isn’t too impressive either. However, Laremy nearly nailed this one.
Result: $5.3 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $5.12 million, which is $0.18m off for a 3.4% error.
I got a press release for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales and on it there was a graphic with a horse drawn wagon with a fiery background saying, “Westerns are hot!” I guess one successful western means the whole genre is on fire, but I am certainly celebrating True Grit topping $155 million this weekend. Who would’ve ever guessed?
Result: $4.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $5.17 million, which is $0.47m off for a 10% error.
Leave it to the box-office top ten to remind me this movie exists.
Result: $3.44 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $3.78 million, which is $0.34m off for a 9.88% error.
Black Swan will crack the $100 million mark by the end of next weekend. Can you believe a film about a psycho ballerina and a western were both able to top $100 million?
Result: $3.4 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.95 million, which is $0.55m off for a 16.18% error.

Next weekend is packed with Cedar Rapids in a limited release, The Eagle, Gnomeo and Juliet, Just Go With It and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Care to make a wager on which one will top the box-office? 3D Biebs? The Sandler flick? The animated 3D feature? The Roman epic with C-Tates?

Make your guesses and be prepared for today’s Super Bowl. Who yah got?
