Back again for the night of drunken celebrities, Ricky Gervais insulting them and a few awards being handed out at the same time. Yup, it’s going to be a lot of fun even if the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is currently being sued for accepting pay-offs for votes. This is the Golden Globe Awards, the most relaxed of all the “major” award shows and I am going to be here for every minute of it.
Over the next few hours (and pages) I will be covering the 2011 Golden Globes live with up-to-the-minute commentary and winners updated in the right-hand-column as soon as they are announced. On top of that, winners will also show up on the official RopeofSilicon Twitter page as well.
This is my third year live-blogging the Globes and if you are here early you can check out previous installments at the following links to get an idea of how I go about things: 2010 | 2009 | Live Blog Home.
You can also check out the full list of nominees right here (or download a .PDF version of the ballot right here) and to browse the RopeofSilicon user predictions on who the users predict will win click right here.
While reading I will highlight all winners
The show begins at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM PST and I will begin live updates around 4:00 PM PST or so with red carpet commentary, so while we wait for things to get started why don’t you comment below and let everyone know where you are reading the blog from and I will be back shortly with the start of live commentary.
3:42:35 PM: Okay, just turned on the E! red carpet special. Not quite sure I am ready for this craziness.
3:47:11 PM: This is really not at all interesting.
3:48:27 PM: Wow, Helena Bonham Carter arrived in her Bellatrix Lestrange costume from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
3:55:11 PM: Natalie Portman sporting the red rose. Oh, and showing the pregnancy. I think I am now supposed to say she looks good now… so, she looks good.
3:57:42 PM: January Jones just might have her January and Jones fall out of that dress.
3:59:41 PM: Switching over to NBC coverage. Because Carson Daly is better than Ryan Seacrest… Right?
4:00:56 PM: Cannot wait for Ricky Gervais to light this show up.
4:02:14 PM: Olivia Wilde looks all sparkly, just like a Twilight vampire.
4:03:00 PM: So Wahlberg and Gervais are sporting sunglasses… I was just told by a fellow watcher in the room that means they’ve been smoking weed. Is this true? Probably not, but probably is.
4:05:20 PM: Nicole Kidman looks like she’s been freshly injected. Oh, and she’s wearing Prada.
4:06:59 PM: Bonham Carter is also sporting sunglasses. She says she was thinking “wicked fairy, witch” for her ensemble. She succeeded.
4:07:59 PM: Sandra Bullock looks like she’s sporting a wig. Isn’t she the one dating Ryan Reynolds now?
4:09:33 PM: Man, this red carpet action reminds me of how much television I don’t watch.
4:10:54 PM: Switching over to the Jets/Pats game… 21-11 Jets at the moment.
4:12:27 PM: I am beginning to second guess my pick of Jake Gyllenhaal for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical)… Actually, I should say I know that’s not going to be correct. Pretty sure Giamatti is going to win for Barney’s Version. Users predicted Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland… that sort of shocked me.
4:13:33 PM: Jesse Eisenberg doesn’t own a television and I am now watching him on television. Is this a vortex of some sort?
4:17:52 PM: There’s Christina Aguilera. She’s singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. I was also just informed she used to hook up with Carson Daly and now he’s interviewing her… The vortex gets even more complex.
4:18:52 PM: Justin Bieber is on the red carpet with giant purple glasses 3D glasses. Sorry, but this guy irks me.
4:19:41 PM: Ugh, and the Biebs is on the carpet with John Chu, the director of his upcoming movie. He’s also performing tonight. None of this excites me.
4:20:59 PM: The nomination for The Tourist succeeded! Angelina Jolie showed up… but Brad Pitt didn’t. Ha!
4:27:21 PM: Hey, there’s Scarlett Johansson… Wonder if she’s sitting with Sandra Bullock?
4:27:57 PM: Okay, January Jones’s dress will be the talk of the Net soon.
4:28:33 PM: When Carson Daly asks someone to tell them what it was like performing for a role what is the answer expected to be?
4:29:46 PM: Robert Pattinson on the red carpet and he’ll be there to present the Best Foreign Language Film.
4:31:50 PM: Randi Zuckerberg, marketing director of Facebook and sister of Mark Zuckerberg, was just interviewed and it was … strange.
4:33:00 PM: Halle Berry has about a billion dollars worth of diamonds on her wrists.
4:33:34 PM: Kevin Spacey gives Jack Abramoff the “Mr. Abramoff” tag… does he deserve that kind of respect? Would have liked it more if he referred to him as Casino Jack, that’s the title of the movie after all.
4:39:37 PM: Michael Douglas is here and cancer free, or at least tumor free. Let’s hope he’s in the clear. Catherine Zeta-Jones is looking good.
4:41:53 PM: Jennifer Love Hewitt dress in a sea shell. I wonder if it will close on her head.
4:48:33 PM: Anne Hathaway is wearing scales and looks like she weighs about 15 pounds. These people need to get together and eat more as a group.
4:49:17 PM: Natalie Morales just complimented Love and Other Drugs. What are the odds she actually saw it?
4:49:58 PM: Robert Downey Jr. was just asked what it was like to be the first person to win for portraying Sherlock Holmes. That may be the worst question I’ve heard all night…. so far.
4:52:28 PM: Okay, seven minutes away from the start of the show… I’m offering up a page break and we’ll move on to the next page. Join me?
