The Academy Announces 2011 Best Makeup Shortlist

The Academy has announced the seven films that will be contending for the Best Makeup Oscar this year and I’ve already had to do some prediction shuffling as Black Swan, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Shutter Island, The Tempest and Inception are not among those that did not make the cut.

My top two predictions, however, did make the list in Alice in Wonderland and The Wolfman. Additionally, some of the best makeup I saw in 2010 was in Barney’s Version, which I’m also happy to see made the final seven.

Jonah Hex and The Way Back are the two films I did not have on my previous list, but let me get your opinion. Looking at that image of Josh Brolin in Jonah Hex, is that makeup better than Ken Watanabe’s makeup in Inception? Better than Natalie Portman’s makeup in Black Swan?

Here’s the list of those that made the cut.

  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Barney’s Version
  • The Fighter
  • Jonah Hex
  • True Grit
  • The Way Back
  • The Wolfman

On Saturday, January 22, all members of the Academy’s Makeup Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

Based on this new list I have updated my predictions to the following:

  1. Alice in Wonderland
  2. The Wolfman
  3. The Fighter

You can check out all of my current Oscar predictions right here. The 83rd Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
