Cannes 2010: Several Films Land at IFC and Sony Classics

I have seen more than a handful of excellent and fascinating films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but there haven’t been any major “discoveries” or unknown films have bubbled to the top causing any legitimate buzz. However, that hasn’t stopped studios, two in particular, from picking up several titles out of the festival that will soon have many of these films heading your way.

First off, IFC has been very busy acquiring titles including Xavier Dolan’s Les Amouts Imaginaires (Heartbeats), Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy (my review here), The Princess of Montpensier (my review here) and Gregg Araki’s Kaboom.

Next, Sony Pictures Classics has added the two films most likely competing for this year’s Palm d’Or beginning with Mike Leigh’s stand out feature Another Year (my review here) and Xavier Beauvois’s Of Gods and Men which I missed earlier, but will seeing in about two hours from now.

Finally, the third studio to the table is Magnet Releasing, which picked up Quentin Dupieux’s telepathic killer-tire film Rubber, which I was really hoping to see, but couldn’t fit it into the schedule. However, while I am still interested in seeing it, buzz on the film around here has not been all that good. “It’s better on paper,” has been the quote I’ve heard most often.
