Caro Moves from ‘Vintner’s Luck’ to ‘Buttercup’

I know very few people are going to click on this headline, but I think reporting on the work of Niki Caro is important since female directors are expected to have a great 2009 with the likes of Kathryn Bigelow already hitting it big with The Hurt Locker and Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Lone Scherfig, Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers all making a splash later this year as well as the upcoming directorial debut of Drew Barrymore (I apologize if I am missing anyone). While the debut trailer for Caro’s The Vintner’s Luck certainly underwhelmed prior to its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September I still believe Whale Rider carries weight and North Country was a solid effort even if it wasn’t a box-office or critical runaway. That said, next up for Caro is Buttercup reports The Hollywood Reporter with a script from Alice O’Neil.

The film centers on a middle-age man who has made a mess of his life but after the death of his wife — and with the help of his adult daughter — attempts to get that life back in order. Brian Koppelman and David Levien have boarded the project as producers along with Michael London’s Groundswell Prods.

Buttercup is being described as a drama with comedic elements as Koppelman tells THR, “Alice writes with such a light touch, which is what makes you want to take a journey with the characters.”

No word on a start date as the production is out to cast.
