Gyllenhaal and Hathaway Experiment With ‘Love and Other Drugs’

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway last enjoyed the company of one another on the Oscar-winning feature Brokeback Mountain in which Gyllenhaal donned the porn-‘stache and Hathaway sauntered around with one of the ugliest blonde hair-dos I have ever seen. It seems the two just didn’t get enough of one another the first time around as The Hollywood Reporter announces they will team up once again, this time for Love and Other Drugs for Ed Zwick (The Last Samurai) and Fox 2000,

Charles Randolph (The Interpreter) adapted the script from Jamie Reidy’s nonfiction book “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman,” which centers on Reidy (Gyllenhaal), a drug rep for Pfizer in the late 1990s who eventually wrote a memoir that shined a light on the practices of the pharmaceutical industry. Reidy begins a relationship with a woman who has Parkinson’s (Hathaway) while on one of his sales calls. Their love story plays out in the political and social context of the time.

Fox is in the process of obtaining the rights from Universal, where the film was originally known as Pharma. The filmmakers hope to begin shooting in the fall.

There is no word on whether or not Zwick still intends to make In the Heart of the Sea for Fox, which is a fact-based story that served as the inspiration for Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” centering on the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex. Production was expected to begin late this year, but I don’t see how it can now.

As for Hathaway, she will next be seen in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland on March 5, 2010 followed by the ensemble rom-com Valentine’s Day for New Line. She is also expected to begin filming Get Smart 2 for Warner Bros. next May.

Gyllenhaal is also a busy boy with Brothers, the award season contender from Jim Sheridan and co-starring Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman, finally finding a release date of December 4, as well as his toplining role in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time set for a May 28, 2010 release.
