Even though I didn’t particularly enjoy Defiance I remain a solid fan of director Ed Zwick. I am a big fan of Glory, Blood Diamond and The Last Samurai… not so much Legends of the Fall, but they all can’t be good can they? One thing’s for certain, I am wildly fascinated by what looks to be his next film, In the Heart of the Sea.
Variety reports Zwick will direct In the Heart of the Sea from a script he penned with Marshall Herskovitz. The film tells the fact-based story that served as the inspiration for Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” centering on the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex.
In 1820 the Essex was stalked and ultimately destroyed by a sperm whale leaving thousands stranded miles from home. Lost at sea for 90 days the crew struggled to survive and only eight were rescued. (highlight the blacked out parts with your mouse for story spoilers)
The film is based on the National Book Award-winning title by Nathaniel Philbrick and will likely serve as Zwick’s next film as New Regency is honing the script and has begun planning the ambitious film with hope to begin production late this year, with Fox distributing. Yup, Fox may have finally found a hit.
