2008 Oscar Winner Predictions

Achievement in makeup

La Vie en Rose

Norbit

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

If Norbit were to win this I think a few suicides may actually occur at the exact same time. La Vie en Rose is the logical pick here.

Achievement in film editing

The Bourne Ultimatum

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Into the Wild

No Country for Old Men

There Will Be Blood

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is the most experimental and risky film I have seen in quite some time and the success of the film has a lot to do with the acting and the directing, but the editing was key. Therefore it has to win this award.

Best foreign language film of the year

Beaufort

The Counterfeiters

Katyn

Mongol

12

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is quite possibly the best “film” I have ever seen, and I am speaking purely on a filmmaking basis on this one. The fact that it was not on the short list for best foreign language film is a travesty and since it wasn’t on the short list it obviously isn’t a nominee. All we are left with are five films I have never seen and I am going with The Counterfeiters because it was the only one screened here in Seattle and therefore would have been the only one I could have seen.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)

Atonement

The Kite Runner

Michael Clayton

Ratatouille

3:10 to Yuma

I think this award should go to Alexandre Desplat for Lust, Caution but since it is not on the list it will be hard for a win. Therefore, I have to go with my second favorite score from 2007 in Atonement.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)

“Falling Slowly” from Once

“Happy Working Song” from Enchanted

“Raise It Up” from August Rush

“So Close” from Enchanted

“That’s How You Know” from Enchanted

It’s finally going to be a win for Once, one of the best films of 2007 that is hardly getting any recognition (David Fincher’s Zodiac is in the same club).

Achievement in sound editing

The Bourne Ultimatum

No Country for Old Men

Ratatouille

There Will Be Blood

Transformers

Kevin O’Connell has been nominated 20 times now without a win, I think number 20 is the key as Transformers will take this one.

Achievement in sound mixing

The Bourne Ultimatum

No Country for Old Men

Ratatouille

3:10 to Yuma

Transformers

Another win for Transformers.

Achievement in visual effects

The Golden Compass

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Transformers

You guessed it, I pick Transformers

to take home three Oscars on Sunday.

Adapted screenplay

Christopher Hampton, Atonement

Sarah Polley, Away from Her

Ronald Harwood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men

Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood

The Coen fun continues with what I consider to be another lock.

Original screenplay

Diablo Cody, Juno

Nancy Oliver, Lars and the Real Girl

Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton

Jan Pinkava, Jim Capobianco, Brad Bird, Ratatouille

Tamara Jenkins, The Savages

People seem to finally be joining me in the loathing of the love for Juno‘s Diablo Cody, but I don’t think that is enough to stop her quirky original screenplay from taking home Oscar gold giving everyone one last chance to mention that she used to be a stripper (see I took my one last chance).
